TIME TRAVEL NOW POSSIBLE – WITH THE VR-TIMETRAVEL-TECHNOLOGY
The Luxembourg City administration planned the implementation of a completely new tourism experience as part of their digitization strategy. To this end, Urban Timetravel, a company of the Digital Devotion Group, developed the idea to realize a time journey with Virtual Reality through a center area of the city, the Pfaffenthal.
Urban Timetravel had the idea to develop a solution, that depicts a time journey as realistically as possible, allowing free movement with a vehicle through the city without any spatial restriction. The experience should be as immersive and realistic as possible and allow several visitors to share the ride together. It is planned to tell an entire story integrating interactive elements, stories and interaction after the prototype. In the final stage, the solution would be an integral part of a tourism solution for the city of Luxembourg, which would complement the traditional “city bus tour”, or even replace it.
Urban Timetravel, part of the DDG – Digital Devotion Group, developed a unique Virtual Tourism Solution, allowing a visitor to experience in VR the city of Luxembourg during the year 1867, while driving with a tour bus through the city. The period of 1867 is particularly important for Luxembourg, since it was the time when the international stabilization of Luxembourg as an independent state was enforced. The visitor takes a “virtual” ride as a passenger on a horse-drawn carriage with a coachman, seeing the buildings and surroundings from the past during the drive exactly where the tour bus is located. Therefore, the reality and the virtual world melt into a perfect time travel experience. Furthermore, numerous other application scenarios are conceivable, such as the enrichment of the solution with educational contents for schools and travelling “into the future,” to revolutionize urban planning.
Urban Timetravel develops on one hand the VR vehicle technology and on the other hand modeled in detail the historical core of the city of Luxembourg, the Pfaffenthal. Hundreds of buildings, streets and objects had to be modeled and staged taken from historical photos and plans of the archives of the city of Luxembourg. The solution allows the simulation of different day times. The solution currently covers a core area of the Pfaffenthal and is planned to constantly expand the area covered.
This historic city tour will be updated in the future with storytelling elements, additional architectural details and further interaction possibilities. The coachman of the city tour can then also function as a city guide providing detailed information on buildings and their history. Furthermore, educational content should be integrated for schools, making history playfully experienceable.
